Great Maelstrom

The Great Maelstrom is a perpetual storm nearly a thousand miles off the east coast of Gailifor and Kurth. It has previously been seen as an impassable barrier of intense storms, but for reasons not yet fully understood, in 1300 AD, the Maelstrom has calmed, if not fully, to the point where it can be navigated successfully.

The Maelstrom is frequently believed to be the work of the deities of the Elven Pantheon, and may have been intended to bar the way against those who would follow the elves in their exodus across the ocean. The modern Syranyle elves found in the western world are descended from elves who balked at trusting their patrons to take them safely through the Maelstrom.
