Makila, the goddess of water and the ocean, has in times past held a much less significant position in the Elven Pantheon. Previously seen as a periphery goddess involved largely with the creation of the world and to a much lesser degree with sustaining and strengthening it, when the Syranyle fled Gailifor, Makila became a source of hope, solidarity and freedom to them. The elves, in turn, have elevated her to the highest position in the pantheon.

The mother goddess is no law-bringer, however, and her sacred text, _The Deepest Depths_, is regarded primarily as a poetic text and a guide to dying well than a prescriptive text outlining laws and principles by which to live. In it, the mother goddess promises to prolong the lives of those who serve her and swears that should her servants be driven into the sea, they will find the depths sheltering and pleasing, and "be touched not by storms," a controversial line from the text that resulted in the schism that saw some of the Syranyle crossing through the Maelstrom, and some seeing it as a sign from the goddess that they were not to stay the course.
