Background

Horace Novak was born in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, to a Cajun mother and a Polish immigrant father. He grew up wealthy and privileged in the Cajun tradition, as his father refused to acknowledge his Polish heritage for fear of prejudice from the rest of the community.

Horace lost his mother, father, and older sister, Caroline, to influenza when he was 15 and away on a fishing trip. Although a minor influenza epidemic had claimed lives in Southern Louisiana at the time, Horace attributes his family's demise to the influence of Mama Adjasou, a pestilent priestess of Vodou who lived in the Bayou.

After graduating from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Horace managed to avoid the WWII draft by becoming a Ghoul. He worked as an accountant alongside several other Ghouls, honing his ability to conceal misappropriated funds with subtlety and elegance, quickly rising to the top of the ranks. He did not know whose Ghoul he was, whose blood he had been drinking, but the pay was generous enough to keep him from asking questions.

One night, an attack on his workplace set it ablaze, and Horace was incapacitated and almost killed. It was then, at the moment of his Embrace, that the monstrous figure of Mama Adjasou dragged him into the world of the Undead.

Appearance

Notable Skills

Horace, although holed up in his hermitage in Battle Creek since the 1960's, claims a list of clients from all over the world. Most of them reside in the US, but also in France, the Caribbean, Algiers, Morocco, Quebec, and Monaco. He also has bank holdings in many of these countries and regions.

Horace has managed to amass a rather obscene amount of wealth by charging only 19% commission to all of his clients, and having nothing to spend his money on. Astute visitors to his hermitage would notice many first editions of classic French literature and sheet music, as well as small, opulent details to his outfits: it is not unusual for Horace to accessorize his ensemble with cuff links and tie studs set with diamonds, rubies, or emeralds.

Horace was taught to play piano by his mother at a very young age, and it is a passion that has managed to stay with him to this day. While enrolled at university, he considered getting a second degree in composition and performance. Unfortunately, his crippling stage fright made that impossible, but he did continue his studies privately, and even published a book of compositions and studies before graduating.

Relationships

Leonard Kent: Although Leo belonged to Oba, he was often contacted by Horace to run errands and deliver packages, as Horace had no Ghouls of his own at the time. The two quickly found themselves becoming friends. Leo wasn't afraid of Horace and could understand him through his thick accent, Horace trusted Leo and admired his work ethic and ability to stay under the radar. It was Leo who introduced Sunshine and her friends to Horace, allowing them to save Orpheus's life. Leo has also 'translated' for Horace on several occasions.

Trivia and Errata

  • Horace hates Michigan winters and despises snow. He longs to move back to Louisiana where the weather is warm.
  • Because he lost his family to influenza, Horace becomes concerned and paranoid if either of his Ghouls exhibit any signs of even a minor cold.
